Today’s nose cone are is a B-17 Flying Fortress from the North African group nicknamed “Superman.” By the end of the war the airplane had over 300 bullet and flak holes. Amazingly, none of the aircraft’s crewmen were ever killed.

I’ve been doing some research on World War II nose cone art recently and have decided to share some of the images I found. Many service personnel painted their aircraft with bright and sometimes gaudy images. These pictures are often both historically and visually inspiring and a treat to see. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Today’s image is the B-24M #44-41876 nicknamed the “Lucky Strike.” The aircraft was assigned to the 530th Bomb Squadron and 380th Bomb Group.
